Why animal names hide (and find) so well

English animal names are unusually generous with the patterns solvers hunt for. Double letters are everywhere — the FF in GIRAFFE, the BB in RABBIT, the CC and OO stacked back-to-back inside RACCOON — and a doubled letter jumps out of a wall of letters far faster than any single one. The OO club alone could carry a puzzle: MOOSE, GOOSE, ROOSTER and MONGOOSE all bring one.

Then there are the rare-letter beacons. In this pool a Z can only belong to ZEBRA, GAZELLE or LIZARD, and an X is almost certainly LYNX — which also happens to be the strangest word here: four letters, no vowel except the Y. Find the rare letter first and the rest of the word falls out around it.

A pool that spans the whole kingdom

The list behind this page was picked name by name to cover as much of the animal kingdom as a grid can hold. The big cats come as a full set — CHEETAH, JAGUAR, LEOPARD, LYNX, BOBCAT, COUGAR — alongside the farmyard regulars, the garden birds (ROBIN, SPARROW, FINCH) and the show-offs (FLAMINGO, PEACOCK, TOUCAN). Reptiles check in from GECKO to TORTOISE, the amphibians send FROG, TOAD and NEWT, and the invertebrates run from BUTTERFLY all the way down to the sea URCHIN.

Every entry is an everyday name between four and ten letters — which is why you'll find HIPPO and RHINO rather than their formal selves. HIPPOPOTAMUS is twelve letters long; it wouldn't even fit across an easy grid. And because subject lists feed the site-wide pool, every animal here can also wander into the random word search.

The stories inside the names

A found word is a little more satisfying when you know what it secretly means. Some favourites from this list:

  • HIPPO Greek for “horse” — hippopotamus is literally “river horse”, which is a generous description of a three-tonne animal.
  • OCTOPUS “Eight-foot”, from Greek. PLATYPUS shares the same ending — it's the “flat-foot”, which duck-billed monotremes apparently deserve.
  • LEMUR Named by Linnaeus after the lemures, restless spirits of Roman folklore — a nod to their huge eyes and silent night-time drifting.
  • FLAMINGO Usually traced back to the Latin flamma — a bird quite literally named “flame”, for obvious plumage-related reasons.

A spelling lesson in a costume

Animal words are among the first any child learns to say and among the trickiest to spell — RACCOON, GIRAFFE, TORTOISE and PIGEON have derailed generations of spelling tests. A word search quietly fixes that: to find RACCOON you have to hold its exact letter sequence in your head while you scan, and the puzzle checks your work for free, because the misspelled version simply isn't in the grid.
